About The History Center

Founded in 1921, the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society maintains three locations that have played key roles in area history.

The History Center
302 East Berry Street

Our museum and offices are located in the former Old City Hall, built in 1892-93. Thousands of children visit each year through school trips made possible by our Heritage Education Fund, while devoted scholars use our collection for research.

The Chief Richardville House
5705 Bluffton Road

This 1827 Greek Revival house was built by Miami Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville, one of the most powerful and wealthy men in Indiana in the early 1800s. His home still oversees many Miami Indian events. Tours are conducted the first Saturday of each month from May through November.

The Barr Street Market

Adjacent to The History Center, the market is the oldest public space in Fort Wayne, where town and country have been meeting since 1837. Each summer, a Farmer's Market continues to attract residents to the downtown area for locally-grown fruits and vegetables.

Our Mission

To serve present and future generations by collecting, preserving, and sharing historic artifacts, documents and images that describe the people, places and events that define Fort Wayne and Allen County history.
